Dog Agility Training
If your bouncy dog seems to need another outlet for his or her energy, or if you’re simply looking for a fun human-canine pastime, agility training may be right for you. First introduced in 1979, this sport has been quickly spreading across the US and Europe as more and more pets and their owners learn about its many benefits.
What Is Agility Training?
Essentially dogs are trained to complete increasing complex obstacle courses. These courses are designed to test several different skills, including high jumping, speed, balance, and aim. A typical course will include some or all of the following elements:
- Jumps, very similar to the hurdles used in equestrian or track field events
- Chutes, or round plastic tunnels that the dogs run through
- Dog walks, similar to the balancing beams used in gymnastics
- Weave poles, or plastic poles that the dogs weave between as they run
Is Agility Training Right for My Dog?
Most dogs love a good obstacle course, but it is not right for everyone. A dog that is overweighed, suffers from medical problems, or is too old to run comfortably should not be forced to attempt agility training.
It will also help greatly if your dog is well trained and active. Communication between dogs and their owners is vital during agility training. It is also possible that certain dogs simply do not have the right temperament for it; they may be too stubborn, or afraid of other dogs.
A qualified veterinarian will be able to tell you if your dog is physically fit for agility training, refer you to good dog parks and organizations, and advise you on basic training techniques.
