Heartworm Treatment [Continued]

Can Heartworms be Cured?

It is possible to cure heartworms in dogs, but not heartworms in cats. Heartworms in dogs are cured by giving the dog an injection of a chemical that begins to immediately break down the heartworms into smaller and smaller pieces until the dog's body is able to absorb them, effectively treating the health risk. The first five weeks of this process are the most strenuous on the dog's body because it is during the beginning stages of the cure that the chemical is doing the most work, or breaking down the most and largest heartworms. For these five weeks you should not allow your dog to do anything strenuous because their body needs all the strength and energy it can keep in order to eradicate the heartworms.

There is currently no cure for heartworms in cats, but it is possible to alleviate your cat's symptoms with heartworm preventative medication.

Heartworm preventative medication for dogs and cats, as well as the injectable heartworm cure for dogs can be obtained through your Dallas veterinarian clinic.
