Should I Stay With My Pet While It’s Put to Sleep?

Another decision to make in this scenario is whether or not to stay with the pet while it is put to sleep. This decision is based primarily on your own emotions. If you believe the event will be too traumatic for you, you may choose not to stay. As mentioned, animals are very perceptive. If you are having your pet put to sleep, it knows that you love it and that you are doing the best for it. As was the case through the pet's entire life, you and your pet know that you love each other and you are both doing everything that you can.

Not everyone can hold themselves together during the euthanasia of a pet. If you don't believe that you will be able to control yourself in a manner acceptable in public, it would be best not to stay while your pet is put to sleep. However, if you believe that can control yourself during the process, you may find it quite comforting to gently pet your dog or cat as it is given the injection. Just as well, your pet will find it very comforting to know that in its last moments its master is there for it.

Recovering from the Loss of a Pet

It may take weeks or possible even months for you to recover from the loss of a pet after it has passed away, but as with every traumatic event in life, this too will pass. When you are ready, consider getting a new pet to play with. The cycle of life always continues on and there is always a new puppy or kitten that needs your love and will fill your life with joy once again.
